Hiking around the world

A) Favorite regions

1. Scandinavia

  • Iceland: I especially like the Laugavegur trail but also Hornstrandir and other places. I hiked/ran the Laugavegur 10 times and even did a solo winter expedition with snowshoes! Worth to mention is the Laugavegur ultra run!

  • Sweden: Sarek is my favorite place, as one of the few remaining wilderness regions in Europe!

  • Norway: So far I visited Jotunheimen and Svalbard and I can recommend both!

2. Central Europe

  • Italy: Here the dolomites are a highlight if you want to visit the Alps! I can recommend the area around the "Drei Zinnen".

  • Switzerland: Some nice places in Glarner Land. Spectacular mountains like Matterhorn, Eiger, Piz Palü!

3. Asia / Oceania

  • New Zealand: This is my favorite place for hiking, where I already spent 8 months and hiked nearly all "Great Walks". The Milford Track is said to be the finest walk in the world! Steward Island, Fjordland, Aspiring National Park and Mount Cook National Park are my favorite regions! But I recommend all National Parks: National parks in New Zealand
  • Nepal: Essential experience in the Himalayas, as here a total different world is awaiting for you. I visited Everest-region, Annapurna-region and the Kingdom of Mustang.

4. America

  • Alaska: Alaska offers fantastic wildlife and remote areas. I liked Denali National Park, but also Brooks Range and the Chilkoot Trail
  • Patagonia: This is fantastic terrain with spectacular mountains. In 2014 a dream came true, as I hiked around Cerro Torre: Spanish Highs supporting solo Patagonia Icefield Trek

B) Gear and Advice

1. Essential gear

These items I see as essential in my whole equipment and build the basic blocks!:

  • Bergans Powerframe 130l backpack

  • Hilleberg Allak Tent

  • Lundhags High Synchro Boots

  • Yellowbrick Satellite Messenger

  • Suunto Ambit GPS watch

2. Other gear

My additional gear varies depending on the planned hike. Usually I carry 10-20kg of camera equipment, my iPad and solar energy for recharging! As outdoor food I prefer "Real Turmat" from Norway and "Back Country Cuisine" from New Zealand. Sometimes I also carry mountain equipment like ice-axe, crampons and weather-proof clothing for extreme conditions!
